Eye Exams
Starting at age 3 it is recommended that all individuals have an eye health exam on an
annual basis. During the medical evaluation, we measure the intraocular pressures for
glaucoma, check for cataracts, and do visual field testing to determine the neurological
integrity of the retina. At the time of the examination it may be recommended that the
eyes be dilated as well.
The refractive status of the eye will also be evaluated. This includes testing for
nearsightedness, presbyopia and astigmatism. Additionally, we will test for the muscle
balance and focusing abilities of the eye. Also, medical testing of blood glucose and
high blood pressure are done, to rule out systemic disease.
At this point, the results of the examination are discussed with the patient and a
determination is made as to wether glasses or contact lenses best fit the patient's
needs. If contact lenses are prescribed additional testing is necessary.
Contact lenses do not ride on the eye, they lie on a layer of tears. One of the most
important measurements we take is of the tear composition-quanitity as well as quality.
It is important the patient has the propper tears to support wearing contact lenses. It is
essential we measure the curvature and topography of the cornea prior to designing the
contact lenses. We will also measure corneal thickness, which is followed over time to
ensure the cornea remains healthy while wearing contact lenses. We will observe the
patients blinking patterns to ensure propper tear circulation on the surface of the eye.
These are the factors that are important for the propper contact lens selection.
The results of these additional examinations will be discussed with you in depth
and the type of contact lenses that best fits your needs will be determined.
A revolutionary procedure calle Corneal Refractive Therapy or CRT, has just been FDA approved to correct
nearsightedness and Astigmatism. This procdure is done while you sleep, without undergoing risk.
We believe that this procedure will make laser and other refractive eye surgeries obsolete.
